The lab is intended to accomplish four goals:

  1. To introduce the Rapid Prototyping used in manufacturing shops and their related terminologies to the students.
  2. To learn the importance of tolerance and dimensioning in manufacturing.
  3. To practice the team work concept and basic design elements through a hands-on practice that will produce a product.
  4. To practice the safety and other rules related to working in a manufacturing shop floor.

The Assignment

Manufacture: Produce a part design using the MakerBot Replicator 2
Stock: PLA, ABS, or Nylon
Tools & Equipment: CAD/CAM software to produce STL files (This lab: TinkerCAD)
Instructions: Please make sure that you have read the lab work rules and regulations before you start working in the lab. It is important that you follow these instructions in order to obtain the maximum points allowed for this assignment.

Using Tinkercad (https://www.tinkercad.com/) a free online CAD software

Task: a KEY CHAIN  with the following parameters:

It must have at least two surface levels or layers

Include your initials (at least two)

Have a hole or place of attachment (see example on class web page)

A selected Engineering Symbol from the list provided

Save your final design as a .STL file for your introduction to 3D printing.

Teams will place and scale the sizing of their designs to fit build space.

Background:

Student need to familiarize themselves with the history and purpose of Rapid Proto-Typing (RPT), its new iterations and ongoing innovations.

The assigned videos and the additional ones individually viewed by the group are to be used to foster discussion about the approaches and methods adapted to perform the lab; provide the knowledge base for the machine setup and project initialization. As part of the lab preparations using the MakerBots videos listed below the following Start-up processes should be viewed and notes taken.

Included processes:

  • Machine Start-up (Menu and controls)

    Platform Leveling (Build preparations)

    Filament Loading

Software Project Loading (Software and computer controls)

Student  groups will be assigned a project. The group will modify the design as needed and assemble the STL files in a manner to minimize the project build.

Grading

Your grade for this assignment is a combination of some general evaluation guidelines and some specific ones related to this assignment.

General Guidelines

  1. How well the team worked together.
  2. Whether the team members observed the safety rules, and other rules as explained in the Lab Work document.
  3. Whether the team progress was on a uniform basis or most of the work was done at the end.
  4. Whether the team followed the rules set for the lab work or not.
  5. The quality of the report, presentation, and demonstration.
