Listed here are
several 'Tips & Tricks' that can be helpful in
getting started. An unarticulated skill overlooked by
many is the process to reduce your ideas down to a
manageable topic; to move from the general idea to a
specific topic. I gave an example in class. I start with
‘climate change’
Each step down, constrains your options. Continue this
process until you reach a ‘research question’. A
Google Search of: thawing permafrost effects: Impacts of Thawing Permafrost When the ice in permafrost
melts, the ground becomes unstable and can slump,
causing rock and landslides, floods and coastal erosion.
Thawing permafrost can damage buildings as it collapses.
In the past few years, there has been a
growing fear about a possible consequence of climate
change: zombie pathogens. Specifically, bacteria and
viruses — preserved for centuries in frozen ground —
coming back to life as the Arctic's permafrost starts to
thaw.
From the
last step I could propose looking at: ‘building
foundations in entire village unmined’; ‘disease
bacteria thawing in communal graveyards endangering
population’; or other questions that further narrow area
of research.
