Using two different methods to make a ring from a coin: Method
#1, hammering to make a band from a quarter; Method #2,center punching and folding
making a ring from a half-dollar. Method #1
(Hammering to make a band) Note: You will NOT be annealing. Polishing or grinding with a drill of any type. You may use a step drill bit in conjunction with drill press. You will be filing the interior of the ring. How many hits (approximately) did take to get to your desired width? How much time did it take? How many different ways did you find to determine the center? [Eye-balling. Measurement.] Which did you pick and why? How many different ways did you find to eliminate the center? [Drilling (hand or drill press)]. Punching (arbor or hydraulic press). What hammer(s) did you use? Why?
Grasping
coin between thumb and index-finger roll coin across anvil (or steel
surface) while striking the top of the coin with a small hammer. Over
time this will flatten and widen the edge of the coin (as shown in
video).
The
assigned videos and the additional ones individually viewed by the group
are to be used to foster discussion about the approaches and method
adapted to perform the lab.
These methods should be annotations in the lab reports.
Modify
until proper size and shape achieved.
Using a specially design half-dollar punch set, dapping block, arbor press, 20-ton shop press, and a ring stretcher to complete the Method #2. There is a Method #2a, if you chose to use the manual approach. Using method outlined in videos, punch out half doller.
Use either press – cut the center out of the coin.
Take
your punched coin to the Doming block (see video for proper use) to put
the initial curve. Curve the coin with the dapping block. Finish you
coin. Method #2a - Insert
curve punched coin on to mandrel to begin shaping.
Modify using mallet until proper size and shape achieved. VIDEOS Each video has its pros and cons. You will NOT be using every technique illustrated in the videos. Please NOTE which processes will not be used in the lab! In your lab report be prepared to discuss which process you emulated and why.
